Soon to be a major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba

In The Wind Through the Keyhole, Stephen King returns to the rich landscape of Mid-World, the spectacular territory of the Dark Tower fantasy saga that stands as his most beguiling achievement.

Roland Deschain and his ka-tetJake, Susannah, Eddie, and Oy, the billy-bumbler—encounter a ferocious storm just after crossing the River Whye on their way to the Outer Baronies. As they shelter from the howling gale, Roland tells his friends not just one strange story but two...and in so doing, casts new light on his own troubled past.

In his early days as a gunslinger, in the guilt-ridden year following his mother’s death, Roland is sent by his father to investigate evidence of a murderous shape-shifter, a “skin-man” preying upon the population around Debaria. Roland takes charge of Bill Streeter, the brave but terrified boy who is the sole surviving witness to the beast’s most recent slaughter. Only a teenager himself, Roland calms the boy and prepares him for the following day’s trials by reciting a story from the Magic Tales of the Eld that his mother often read to him at bedtime. “A person’s never too old for stories,” Roland says to Bill. “Man and boy, girl and woman, never too old. We live for them.” And indeed, the tale that Roland unfolds, the legend of Tim Stoutheart, is a timeless treasure for all ages, a story that lives for us.

King began the Dark Tower series in 1974; it gained momentum in the 1980s; and he brought it to a thrilling conclusion when the last three novels were published in 2003 and 2004. The Wind Through the Keyhole is sure to fascinate avid fans of the Dark Tower epic. But this novel also stands on its own for all readers, an enchanting and haunting journey to Roland’s world and testimony to the power of Stephen King’s storytelling magic.

Enjoyed it

I am a late comer to the Dark Tower series. Over the last two weeks I've read all of the books in order except for this one. I wanted to read it last as it had been written, long after the conclusion of the series even though the story fits somewhere between the fourth and fifth books. It seemed to me that King was faced with two challenges, the first, reacquainting himself and new readers with the characters he created so long ago, and, second, telling a story that could stand on its own without the remainder of the series to prop it up. Master story teller that he is both challenges were smartly met. I am reminded that like in life, the destination is really nothing more than an excuse for the journey and the journey itself is all that really matters.

Perhaps the most beautiful, unforgettable tale from Roland's past...

The wind through the keyhole, which seems to take up well over half the pages of this whole novel, is one perhaps the most riveting, unforgettable piece of The Gunslinger's rough, sandblasted past. Gave it five stars; beautiful story within a story.

The Wind Through the Keyhole

Thank you, Stephen King, for throwing us this delightful bone. We are reunited with Roland and ka-tet, a group I thought I would never see again, until such time I choose to read the septology a second time. Now, it is an octology. There are actually three tales here, all stacked together, within each other, like so many Russian dolls. We get to travel a bit with the ka-tet; we return to Roland's youth as a novice gunslinger ( if there were such a thing;) and, we here a tale of unheralded bravery and loyalty, of Tim Stoutheart, a boy not unlike Jake, who is forced to discard his boyish ways early, and must step into manhood before it's time. In typical King fashion, the characters are well developed and unique, and the pace is quick - but not too hasty. Enjoy, fellow reader, this is very much worth consuming. Hile, Mr. King.

This is a very nice addition to the DT series/collection and reads well even if you haven't read any other books in the series. More Roland... Well Done

I hated reading as a young adult, so it wasn't until I'd finished my freshman year of college, and therefore freshman English and would never again be required to read a book, that I read a book for pleasure. If you enjoyed those books, I think you'll enjoy The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole as well. King's story telling ability and character development are at their best, I think, when his protagonist is an adolescent boy on a quest. This most recent Dark Tower contribution features this prominently in a "tale within a tale within a tale" that is clever and captivating. I will qualify my praise by noting that I am not a blindly devoted King constant reader and have at times been quite annoyed by what I felt were weak characters and plot twists in several novels including some of those within The Dark Tower series. I'm not too hard on Mr. King on those occasions but I wouldn't give a positive review on every book he's written just because I'm a fan. That said, Wind Through the Keyhole is amongst his best work.

Great Book, But Not Much About Roland

This book was fun to read and had two great stories inside. Only one deals with any of the characters we know and love from the DT novels. You can certainly tell it was written by King and is in the DT universe but if you go in expecting to learn much more about Rowland, Eddie, Susan, Jake, Oy, Cuthbert, or Alain you won't find that here. There are maybe 30 pages that include the current Ka-Tet, but in between those pages it's all about Rowland telling two different stories; one about him, and a second story with all new characters. I enjoyed both stories, very much. But they were not what I expected. I guess I was expecting more of a 'Wizard & Glass' tale with Rowland and his old Ka-Tet, but this was a much smaller tale with fewer main characters. Just view this book as an independent DT tale and you won't be disappointed.

A bit of redemption for King

I was a long time fan of King, a constant reader for years. The Dark Tower series took me right away and I still think of the haunting opening lines of The Gunslinger. But King copped out in the end, abandoning his main character, Roland, to an endless pursuit of a quest, reliving all possibilities...condemned to some weird type of literary hell. In my view, King had truly forgotten the face of his father. Wind Through the Keyhole drops the reader back into the middle of the saga and we find Roland hunkered down, telling a story to his friends. The story is great and I loved being with Roland again. This is a great read so if there are any out there like me, go for it. I can't know why King wrote this. I can only hope he regrets how he left Roland and this is his attempt at a bit of redemption.

Not what I was hoping for. A great read nonetheless. Worth the money.

Good enough story.

I'm glad to have a little bit more of a manageable page count on this book compared to the last few of the Tower story. There is a pretty bad glitch near the end that repeats the same page over and over but I was able to get past it after a while. There's really not much to Roland's story at all, in the present or in the past, as most of the story revolves around a tale the 'slinger tells a child in the past. I'll take it though. Worth a couple of days reading.

Arco207

Freaking Awesome!

Whether you read The Dark Tower series or not, this is a great story... or a great story within a great story within a story. The concept is genius. Though I'm a die hard Roland fan, I could read gunslinger-related tales all day long. Highly recommended; I'm sad I've finished it so quickly!

Why backtrack

I have seen so people complain that this is book 4.5 and claim to think this a book taking place after the Dark Tower. That being said, come on. It says in the first line of the description that they are near the River Whye. That answered all questions for me about where the book lies in the series. That also being said, THIS BOOK IS AWESOME. READ IT!!!!

This is a great read so if there are any out there like me, go for it. I can't know why King wrote this. I can only hope he regrets how he left Roland and this is his attempt at a bit of redemption.

Like a visit from old friends

If you have read the dark tower story you will enjoy this book. I will say no more as it is more fun to just experience it.

Wind through the keyhole

Not what I was hoping for. A great read nonetheless. Worth the money.

Good enough story.

I'm glad to have a little bit more of a manageable page count on this book compared to the last few of the Tower story. There is a pretty bad glitch near the end that repeats the same page over and over but I was able to get past it after a while. There's really not much to Roland's story at all, in the present or in the past, as most of the story revolves around a tale the 'slinger tells a child in the past. I'll take it though. Worth a couple of days reading.

Awesome! I think I'll re-read the whole series. I'll be waiting for the next King novel patiently. Thank you Mr. King!

READ IT!!!!
